Mike Zambidis to Defend SuperKombat Title Plus More SK 2015 Details

  • Published in Kickboxing

Mike Zambidis captured the SuperKombat Middleweight Championship back in August of 2013 against Harun Kina in Romania and now in January he is set to defend that title for the very first time in a return match. At an Iron Challenge 2015 event in Greece Zambidis is set to defend that title against Kina. If you are wondering why it isn't on a SuperKombat card proper, that's because 2015 will be the year that SuperKombat begins licensing out their brand to interested partners.

Previously they would license out tryout events, but starting this year they will also license out Elimination and World Title fights. The SuperKombat season begins on March 7th with their first event of this season, but look for more events held around the world with fights that impact the world of SuperKombat throughout the year. We'll have more on SuperKombat and Mike Zambidis when it's available.

  • Published in Kickboxing

SuperKOMBAT

SUPERKOMBAT will continue with their World Grand Prix series with the fourth event that is looking to qualify one man for the SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix at the end of this year. This is of course coming hot on the heels of the WGP III event that went down just over a week ago and saw more SUPERKOMBAT action. Outside of the tournament there are some big superfights, including Damian Garcia vs. James Wilson as well as Sebastian Ciobanu in action and a really great fight between Amir Zeyada and Bogdan Stoica.

The Stoica brothers are usually prominently featured in SuperKombat events, with this one being no different, but this time around Bogdan Stoica will have a tough challenge by the way of Amir Zeyada. Zeyada has not been super active over the past year, in fact he hasn't fought since 2011, but it will be great to see him back in action against a top competitor.

Ben Edwards Bests Catalin Morosanu in Australia

  • Published in Australia

Morosanu/Edwards

This weekend might have been a bit slow when it comes to Kickboxing news, but in Australia there was a battle between two big name Heavyweights by the way of Catalin Morosanu from Romania squaring off against Australia's own Ben Edwards. The two were competing for the Kings of Kombat Heavyweight Championship, but I think most importantly, for standing in the Heavyweight division across the world. Morosanu has been trying to make his way into the elite for a while now, somewhere that Edwards has had experience.

It turned into a slugfest early on, according to reports that we've received, with Morosanu fighting the way that we all know he fights; heavy hands, looking for the knockout blow. Edwards, on the other hand, who hasn't always been known as a technician, fought a smarter fight by going after Morosanu's legs throughout the bout. Morosanu was focused on knocking Ben's head off, which meant that he was not of the mind to check the leg kicks, which was his undoing when it came time for the judges to deliberate.

Edwards won the Majority decision over Morosanu, but it sounds like it was a very entertaining and exciting fight.

Andrei Stoica vs. Horace Martin Set for SuperKombat's June 21st Show

  • Published in Kickboxing

June 21st will be a big day for the sport of Kickboxing with a few huge events and SuperKombat is looking to make their stick out more with Andrei Stoica defending his Super Cruiserweight Title against Horace Martin. This will be Andrei Stoica's first defense of the SuperKombat Super Cruiserweight Championship since he won the title back in December against Ondrej Hutnik.

Stoica's last fight was in the GLORY ring in March where he lost via first round knockout to Danyo Ilunga, although there is no shame in losing to a fighter the caliber of Danyo Ilunga. If anything it should inspire him to push harder and to want to prove that he does belong in the ring with the likes of Ilunga.

Expect more announcements on the SuperKombat June 21st show shortly.

SuperKombat's November is Shaping Up to be Awesome

  • Published in K-1

SuperKombatIt is nice to be able to pump some good news into the Kickboxing world and it is interesting that the news will branch away from the mainstays of K-1 and It's Showtime and focus instead on Romania's SuperKombat series. SuperKombat is a product of Eduard Irimia, who helped out with the "Local Kombat" shows that were popular in Romania. They are pushing hard and fast to gain a foot hold in the ever-evolving world of Kickboxing in a landscape where K-1 is not the king. It is a bold move and the execution has been anything but flawless, but the effort is noted and is beginning to pay off.

In November SuperKombat plans to run two big shows and looks to benefit from K-1's inability to promote the October 29th World Grand Prix Final 16 event in Nanjing. The finals of the SuperKombat WGP are on November 19th with Catalin Morosanu facing some real competition in Melvin Manhoef in a bout that has been rumored for a very long time but yet to materialize. The Finals themselves features four fighters; Ismael Londt, Erhan Deniz, Sergeii Laschenko and Pavel Zhuravlev and the rest of the card is to be filled out by Ruslan Karaeve, the Stoica brothers and Albert Kraus.

On the 17th, just two days before, it was revealed that Eduard Irimia Productions and Eurosport will co-promote another event featuring big name fighters. It will feature yet another Heavyweight tournament and Superfights, with Hesdy Gerges announced as participating in one of the Superfights. The tournament will feature Rico Verhoeven, Mourad Bouzidi, Anderson "Braddock" Silva, Daniel Sam, Sebastien Van Thielen and Roman Kliebl. For last minute that is pretty good. [source]

'The Godfather of Kickboxing' Thom Harinck Back Into the Mix

  • Published in Kickboxing

In 1972, director Francis Ford Coppola breathed life into Mario Puzo's most famous crime drama, The Godfather. The story and its subsequent sequels chronicled the story of the Corleone family from their origins in Sicily, rise to power and finally the efforts of the family to legitimize the family's name and fortune. One of the best scenes in trilogy is when an exasperated Michael Corleone exclaims, "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!"

Why even bring up The Godfather on a kickboxing site?

Why, because sometimes the truth can be stranger than fiction. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, something else big was happening in 1972, the founding of Chakuriki Gym in Amsterdam by Thom Harinck. The 'Chakuriki' style which represents a fusion of techniques from boxing, Kyokushin karate, judo, jujitsu wrestling, Muay Thai and Savate for over forty years became a dominant influence on the fighting styles of many of the biggest names in kickboxing. Among his many talented pupils standouts such as Peter Aerts, Andy Hug, Badr Hari, Melvin Manhoef, Branko Cikatic, Hesdy Gerges, Pedro Rizzo, Jerome LeBanner and countless others have had their careers and fighting style shaped by Harinck's Chakuriki philosophy. In 2013, however, one of the most influential men in the sport decided to retire. At that time Harinck stated that he would continue to support the sport from the sidelines focusing his energy on the completion of a book about his life, spending time with his family, participating in European forums regarding kickboxing, and of course doing seminars all over the world.

During his first year of retirement, Thom Harinck was still one of the busiest retirees I had ever met. In 2015, one of his former pupils, current Glory light heavyweight champion, Saulo Cavalari reached out to him for management services. Always one to support the sport and his former pupils, Harinck agreed. With one foot already back in the game, 2016, Thom Harinck has decided to take Chakuriki full throttle again, coaching a small number of his former pupils including Saulo Cavalari, Hesdy Gerges and Amir Zeyada. Just when he thought he was out, they pulled him back in. His comeback has not been unconditional. While Harinck has sold his old gym in Amsterdam, he has found another place to train and it, like before, is under the Chakuriki system: hard training, no talking, no drugs. The Chakuriki style according to Harinck is not just a fight style, it's a lifestyle and in 2016 it begins again. For forty years Thom Harinck dedicated his life to training boys to be the best men in the ring and as long as he has his health, he's dedicated to training for many more. Watch out Glory, K-1, SuperKombat......Harinck's back.
