Andrei Stoica's Win Overturned; Apologizes for Racist Comments

  • Published in Kickboxing

We've received word from Super Kombat's press team that the controversial decision between Andrei Stoica and Redoun Cairo has been overturned by Super Kombat's team after they evaluated the score cards. At the request of Eduard Irimia the review happened and the bout has been declared a "No Contest." The score cards for the fight were 29-29, 29-29 and 30-29 in Stoica's favor. Since Stoica would need a majority to be declared a winner, Irimia noted that this bout should have gone to an extension round, instead Stoica was declared the winner in haste.

They have also confirmed that the two will meet again at a future date for Super Kombat.

On top of this, Stoica's remarks post-fight were... crass to say the least, as well as uncalled for. During a post-fight interview, Stoica, while explaining his opponent, used the dreaded "n-word" to describe him. Super Kombat officials have urged him to make a public apology. His defense is, apparently, that he has black friends and was just joking, as well as has bad english.

"I want to ask for forgiveness again. There was an error of expression because not speak good English. In addition, two of my best friends are black. I'm not a racist."

SuperKombat's 2011 Awards

  • Published in Kickboxing

Without a doubt, 2011 has been the year that promotions outside of K-1 have stepped up, big time. This includes Romanian promoter Eduard Irimia's SuperKombat. It felt like it came out of nowhere, but came out of a network of local events promoted within Romania successfully by Irimia over the years to build to the formation of SuperKombat. SuperKombat held a World Grand Prix for Heavyweights this year in a world where the only other promotion doing a big Heavyweight tournament was Fight Code. Errol Zimmerman walked away with the SuperKombat One Night WGP, while Sergei Laschenko won the World Grand Prix Championship this year while Vitali Akhramenko walked away with the Fight Code championship. To say that this was interesting would be an understatement.

Over the weekend SuperKombat held an awards ceremony to commemorate their first year of existence in Romania. Of course, it is telling that some of the bigger names in Kickboxing were presented with awards in front of a giant screen that read "EDUARD IRIMIA PRODUCTIONS" on it, but I guess being on the cover of Forbes in Romania is a big deal. Outside of some of the beautiful cities all that I know about Romania is what I learned about the prostitutes that died in a crate container on the way into the Baltimore port in season 2 of HBO's "The Wire." So it is safe to say that Irimia is a big deal in his hometown, big enough to have his name on a board.

Knockout of the Year Errol Zimmerman (vs. Roman Kleibl)
Fight of the Year Russian Cornelius vs. Slavo Polugic
Special Fight of the Year Alexandru Longu vs. Bob Sapp
Best Evolution in 2011 Bogdan Stoica
Newcomer of the Year Benjamin Adegbuyi
Most Popular Fighter Catalin Morosanu
2011 SuperKombat WGP Winner - Sergei Laschenko

SUPERKOMBAT Teams with Festival dell'Oriente

  • Published in Kickboxing

SK

So SUPERKOMBAT's Eduard Irimia has decided to pay some homage to the world of traditional martial arts with this year's Festival dell'Oriente in Italy. Think of this festival as, well, a huge martial arts festival that will have over 5,000 martial artists from 113 countries competing for a world championship. How SUPERKOMBAT fits in is that on the third day of the festival they will host SUPERKOMBAT New Heroes: Asia vs. the Rest of the World.

The entire Festival dell'Oriente event is based around amateur competition and SUPERKOMBAT is looking to establish itself not only as a professional sports league, but one that is in tune with culture, martial arts and history. SUPERKOMBAT's New Heroes event will also be the only professional sporting event held at the Festival dell'Oriente and will be broadcast to all of SUPERKOMBAT's media partners around the world.

It's an interesting concept and it's cool to see SUPERKOMBAT being involved with something that is connected with the roots of the sport like that.

SuperKombat Makes a Difference in Flood-Afflicted Region of Romania

  • Published in Kickboxing

I feel like the world of fight sports has been afflicted with some really, really awful press of late. Right now there is just so much negative press out there, a lot of it based around the whole War Machine/Christy Mack story that just won't go away. So I'm happy to see that Romanian kickboxing promotion SuperKombat is actually doing something positive, they are giving back to their community. Two weeks ago there was flooding in Valcea County in Romania. This flooding affected many of the over 400,000 residents there.

Valcea County was the first place where SuperKombat held an event in 2011 and they looked to give back yesterday when staff members and fighters took part in a humanitarian effort to deliver food, drinking water and clothing to those who were affected by the flooding. Residents are still recovering from the floods and it's nice to see a promotion like SuperKombat giving back.
